Uplistsikhe, meaning "the Lord's Fortress," is an ancient cave town located in the Shida Kartli region of Georgia. The town dates back to the 6th century BC and was an important center of trade and culture along the Silk Road.
Uplistsikhe is built into a rocky hill overlooking the Mtkvari River and consists of a complex network of caves and tunnels. The town served as a residence for the ruling class, as well as a center of worship and learning.
Visitors to Uplistsikhe can explore the various parts of the complex, including the main cave temple, the royal palace, and the amphitheater. The town is also home to several rock-hewn churches, including the Church of the Assumption, which dates back to the 10th century AD.
The complex covers an area of approximately 8 hectares (19.8 acres). Uplistsikhe is located about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) east of the town of Gori and can be reached by car or public transport. The town is open to visitors throughout the year, but the best time to visit is during the spring and autumn months when the weather is mild.
